Backpacking in the Tetons: Day One

We camped nearby the permit office the night before so we could
get there right at 8AM.
Six adults, four kids four and under, and 18 24 miles of backpacking. That sums up our weekend a few weeks ago.

In July, right after Tyson finished his semester, we took a family backpack trip into the Tetons with his parents, sister Sierra, and brother-in-law Jared. The plan was to do Paintbrush Canyon, about an 18-mile trek. Unfortunately when we arrived to get the permit that morning at 8 AM, there was already a line, and the people just in front of us got the last permit to do that canyon. We did a quick readjustment of plans, and the ranger who gave us the permit for Granite Canyon/Death Canyon told us it was similar in mileage with less elevation changes. It was beautiful!

These pictures are from Day 1:

Xi was super happy almost the entire 3 days ;)
Tyson's dad couldn't handle carrying Xi with a backpack, so Tyson ended up with triple duty that day--
a pack, Xi, AND Jacob. His shoulders were sore!
I hiked with Amri most of the time (which means we always ended up in camp last ;)

Amri and Jeffrey carried their own backpacks most of the time.

Refilling our water
Soaking tired feet
Since Jacob was carried the entire first day, he wasn't tired AT ALL that night, and it took us forever to get him to sleep! (We remedied that the rest of the time, and he hiked about half of the next two days.)
